Entry 2

Day 1 Evening: so much for the escort of soldiers scouting the lands. We're on our own and not doing so well. We've claimed the land if wetting it with our blood counts, as we faced LARGE mosquitoes and packs of hobgoblins.

  1. Kukla...So I'm distracted with my broken pistol as the group continues up the trails looking for the "monastery atop a hill." Run smack into a berry bush...sweet tasting. As I cram a dozen into my backpack, the thorns remind me to be on the lookout, but nothing on the hill to my right. Chiding by the others for me to catchup.

More buzzing sounds...this time mosquitoes...LARGE mosquitoes (stirges)! Blood-suxing pests that weaken Veocyn and Angus (CON loss) that Oleg can't heal.
We're cursed! Olaf wasn't much the leader earlier today but he MUST have hexed us when our cleric refused to heal his men.

For example, we come upon a stagnant pool with stench all around... in the form of hobgoblins standing behind the walls of their crude village.

Their leader spotting us and commanding a charge to "Kills the humans." Careful aim by our arches...misses every last shot! Cursed I say.

8 are already upon us before I can reload my xbow. I scratch a few with my rapier but most of our blade swings miss. Cursed I say, as Veocyn breaks a bowstring.
At least Angus mumbles something that causes 4 to drop, but that doesn't stop the wounds handed to our cleric who soon drops. Even Angus falls.

So I risk wounds to rush to Oleg pouring the vial (Norm gave me) of liquid down his throat. His eyes flutter open.
And even when we do wound the filth, they run away!

Which reminds me the story Geno was telling earlier...battle plans. What's our objective for the day? Stick to the plan. If the fight doesn't fit the objective, runaway. Conserve our resources for the real encounters.

So there I stand, 5 bolts left in my quiver, 3 bolts on the battlefield. No enemy with crossbows for me to restock bolts. So I'm still on the empty battlefield looking for my used bolts as Veocyn is calling for retreat. When the goblin leader strides forward with another squad.

"Kill the leader and we'll turn the tide!" I risk attacks as I rush around the hobgoblin fodder to get at the leader. Providing flanking for my rogue archers who can't hit the side of a hill.

Not looking good as Oleg and Angus drop...maybe we should have retreated. But the leader is wounded enough to call his own retreat. He's getting away. Despite the risk of my pistol blowing up (MISFIRE risk now 5), I take aim around his fodder that give him cover. Boom! Nicked him. Disappointed my new weapon didn't startle or stun the hobgoblins. At least Geno's arrow sinks deep killing the leader giving us vitory as the remaining foe runaway.

And come to find out, those berries are healing nurishment. Which helps revive Oleg and Angus. I guess it wasn't all bad as Geno did find some gold in the empty huts.

Camp back at the berry fields near the pond and hill. Finally time to repair my gun. Exhaustion helps tune out the noisy night of animals coming down the trails to the pond's edge.

Morning, refreshed. Back to the trails still looking for that dang hill.

Still cursed as Oleg's clanking armor draws another band of hobgoblin. So much for hiding to ambush...spotted. Now everyone sneaking thru the trees. Trees to spoil my shots whether pistol or crossbow. So rapier it is, with little effect. Despite fighting defensively, I'm soon down.

As later told, only Veocyn knew where I dropped. After the battle he led the cleric to my side saving me just before I bled out.

So far, we haven't been able to avoid the fights. And at the rate our members drop, we'll soon be out of berries and healing. And I'll be out of bullets and bolts. I tried one of the goblin bows but too big and unwielding for me. I'll just have to craft my own bolts out of their arrows come nighttime rest.

  2. Angus...The cost of running off the men-at-arms proved high today. We ran into some large goblins on this hill. Apparently they have a camp up here. Instead of having men to throw in front of us to fight the creatures we had to do the heavy lifting. Fortunately, they had a weak mind and 4 succumbed to the blast of color. I wanted to summon my frog but as he would not be around long I decided not too. I did crush a few skulls with my hammer. I collapsed due to blood loss but Oleg healed me. I am beginning to like this person.

We found some berries that healed us. I collect some to help heal the party. We got into an argument about who would carry the berries which was silly as I planned to use them on other members when they needed it. I hope to find more creatures to practice my hammer on soon but wish they did not have those bows.

  3. Geno...After parting ways with Assloaf and his inept crew I finally feel free to explore. I attempted to use what little tracking skills I learned as a child to help us figure out where to go. After dealing with some giant mosquito's my tracking skills lead us right to a hobgoblin encampment. A dozen of them were there and with the gnome in our group (*note to self...gnome may be a liability) there was no chance of an escape. 12 damn hobgoblins! We were in way over our heads and we knew it. It is apparent we could us a big fighter type and maybe we should seek the aid of such a person asap. We need to stop the enemy before they get to our ranged (and I mean me) allies.

Not sure how we did it be we scared them off and I was able to kill the leader as he ran off. The oaf of a cleric dropped like a rock and so did one of the others. The gnome creature poured some liquid down the clerics throat and he suddenly awoke. Then he went about healing others like he should have been doing. Tails tucked we decided to go rest and try again tomorrow. On the way to a safe camp site that giant idiot Oleg made so much noise he attracted another group of hobgoblins. Luckily and due to my quick elfven thinking I spoke in goblin to them and convinced them we were another goblin patrol.

The next day was more of the same. Hobgoblins we could not avoid and a fight we barely won with 2 more companions down and again one being that worthless idiot cleric. It is not his fault however that he has to be the tank as we have no fighters. I blame myself for not seeing that weakness and now I will address that once that option is available. When I seen that the spellcaster had fallen I laughed inside at the karma do to the fact of him not sharing healing berries. I tried to reason with him but he is stubborn and no one else seemed to care....so fuck it.

I digress, before I could react the cleric was healing Anus / Angus, or something like that. Should have left him there until we picked the berries off him. I do not hate any of these people yet but they have great potential for hatred. We need to fix our weaknesses quickly.

  4. Oleg...Trying to keep Evgeni alive is very difficult when I cannot keep myself alive. I do not understand why I must be up front. why did we not keep the fighters around or better yet why did they run off so.

The little guy Kooky has saved me from the brink of death and luckily for me before I have done my sacred duty. Now I am indebted to two. This is going to be a hard life to cycle through. I must generate karma and the way I am falling, very quickly.
